Float On
Resources are consumed based on the number of resources defined against the work unit. Resources will only be consumed up to the Float Consumption Max value set against the work unit.

Float Specific
The max consumption rates values will apply to all work units.

Using Float Discrete, Visual APS is forced to consume resources based on the quantity to produce. It will not consume more resources than required to produce the quantity.

Consider an operation has the following requirements

Quantity of manufacture 2

  • 2 Hours of run time
  • 1 Resource to complete

Units can not be produced faster than this.

To produce two units would therefore take four hours.

  1. Right click on the work unit and select edit
  2. Set the value of Resources to 3
  3. Check on the Float Discrete checkbox
  4. Click on the Schedule Tab and select Float On
  5. Schedule an operation at 09:00

In the example above, resources are consumed based on time it takes to produce each unit. Two units are required to be produced and there are three resources available.  As it takes one resource, two hours to produce each unit, two resources are consumed for two hours each to produce the two units required.

Scheduling is successful and the elapsed time is 2 hours.

Extended this scenario to the example above you could also produce 3 units in the same elapsed time as you have 3 resources available.  However, four units would take 4 hours of elapsed time (considering available resources are as in the above example).
